Studio Tour

Welcome!  Take a tour of one of my spinning and weaving projects.  This is the creation of an afghan made from dog hair.  A Leonberger to be specific...

What a beautiful yarn!

Yep, from these two beautiful Great Pyrenees, Lola and Louie... and a pleasure to spin.
Comes this wonderful fluff.
...this skein of 2ply Pyrenees Yarn.
...a center pull ball.  And then, it is transformed again into ... ?
I wonder what Lola and Louie's mom will make from her Pyr yarn.

I knit this little teddy bear as a keepsake from a different Great Pyrenees.
So that is what you can do with some of that dog hair.   It takes about 1 ounce of dog fur to make this 5" tall teddy bear.

As the wheel turns...

I now have yarn from that cute bunny pictured in an earlier post.  There is 8 ounces of yarn in these photos.

Wind a skein
The two ply yarn is wrapped around this tool called a niddy-noddy.  This makes the skein.
The skeins are then washed and dried before winding into a center pull ball.

I'll post the final photo of the center pull balls another day.  I'm off to start the next project.  Stay tuned.
Oh, you might wonder how long it took to get from bunny brushings to the yarn in the sink.....20 hours.  It isn't a fast process.

What's on my spinning wheel?

I'm currently spinning the brushings from this cute Blue Jersey Wooly...

single ply

I start by spinning a single ply yarn from the puffs of bunny wool.  Two single ply yarns are then spun together in the opposite direction to make the 2 ply yarn.  This 2 ply yarn is then wound into a skein and washed.

So that is what you do with all that dog hair....

Save the brushings from your furry friend.  I can spin it into yarn.  From there, the possibilities are endless.  The dog yarn can be knit, crocheted, woven or used in other handcrafts.

Here is a pleated jacket I knit from the brushings of Terra, a Leonberger.
